Garden Lace (Princess Livia)

I found it in a display case at a local ladies' consignment shop: a slender tablet of transparent pale-green glass surmounted by a milky celadon cap.  Though unfamiliar with the brand, I could tell from the white Madonna lily imprinted on its face that it was grade-A bridal material.

I prepared to be bored off my tits.

"Lily white florals envelop you like a veil of delicate lace..."  So runs the descriptive text offered by Princess Livia's parent company, the Chicago-based beauty corporation Cosmetíque.  I'm sure the symbolic import of the color white carried a different weight back when brides actually were virgins, their innocence enforced by the twin authorities of God and Good Breeding.  But these are obsolete standards to which few modern women subscribe.  What does "lily white" mean today?

In Garden Lace, it means green, green, green.  Green is the color of growth and fertility, and I admire the makers of Garden Lace for choosing the spectrum's most fecund hue over the predictable purity of white.  A woman is not a pillar of cloud, after all; rather, she's far better off emulating the primitive Eve described by Stella Gibbons in Cold Comfort Farm: "as close to the earth as a bloomy greengage". In a similar spirit, Garden Lace's green is fresh, sappy, and slightly bittersweet, like the sticky juice produced by broken flower stalks.  I'm not certain it's bona fide galbanum -- there's something a little too tinny and synthetic about it -- but it acquits itself honorably as the dark, shady background against which this sweet spring floral can pop.

Speaking of flowers, I'd say there's more lilac than lily in Garden Lace-- but again, this is not a drawback.  Lilac plays well with others, particularly muguet. Here, the two friends mingle with a subtle spice dimension that further erodes the vision of bridal purity.  I only wish they'd been given more playmates, in the form of one or two anchoring resins.  (Styrax or benzoin leap to mind-- lighter than amber or labdanum, and powdery enough to counterbalance that sticky sap element.)  The drydown is a mild, lactonic thing as opaquely milky-minty as that plastic cap.

Not bad for an Avon wannabe priced at $1.50!

Honestly, the finale of Season 5 may be the saving grace of it because at least the weird estrangement Gabrielle had with Xena over Eve’s birth was properly justified. But it’s always going to strike me the way Gabrielle was all “our daughter” until Eve killed Joxer.

It’s like Eve being born was evidently to me a second chance for both Xena and Gabrielle to be parents - but this time as a family/domestic dynamic with each other. But they decided to do the whole 25 years later thing and have Eve grow up to become a blood-thirsty bastard of a character as Livia, The Bitch of Rome and have her kill Joxer and suddenly it’s no longer “ours” until the finale of ‘Motherhood�� when Xena says it. And despite us not really knowing the way Gabrielle feels because she just stays quiet - it’s like something has been restored with Gabrielle and Eve in what happens at the climax of it. Something more than their lives.

And if there’s anything that REALLY bothered me about Season 5 - it was definitely what was missing with them because Callisto gifted Xena and Gabrielle a child and then concealed her own soul within that child for a reason. To bless the both of them. And if there’s any part of her arc that felt undermined at all,… it was that censorship of two women having a child. And the only way it works that that felt organic,… was through Gabrielle rescinding her parental connection with Eve only because she killed her best guy friend.

Until then it was denial and ignorance of the narrative which was meant to be viewed as WLW domesticity. And the contention in Gabrielle was the only thing that ever made that denial and ignorance of the narrative feel like a natural and organic character progression.

Sure, Joxer’s death at the hand of Livia was important and should be respected and honoured. But so should Gabrielle’s parental connection with THEIR daughter.

All I can “hope” for is that Gabrielle and Eve developed that parent/child dynamic again after ‘AFIN’ because Gabrielle deserved to be a part of her life in more than just a “you’re my mother’s person” way and you know Renee and Adrienne would have refused to play it that way if they had a continuation. I mean Adrienne was always pretty adamant that Eve had 2 parents and it was meant to be played that way.

It was due to WLW censorship restrictions why it couldn’t be but they tried their best to regardless. The fandom collectively hate Season 5 and I don’t blame them. But this was the thing that irked me the most. Not the Man-Inserts but the inorganic estrangement. It’s like, these two women have literally just been to hell/heaven and back together - this feels very wrong.

But it’s Season 5 and Season 5 is…. Well… Season 5.

Most of the fandom just wishes it would die in a fire.

But ‘Motherhood’ saved it I would say. Marginally…
